Williams explained in an interview with GQ that for many years people were more interested in her sex appeal than her talent.
"I wouldn't say that that would be one of my first qualities as a human being - being sexy," she told the magazine.
Williams added: "I think because my character on Dawson's Creek was sexy… sexualized… sexual… I saw all the negative attention and connotations that can come along with that. And that those things can keep people from seeing you clearly."
The actress claimed late last year that she would love to reunite with her Dawson's Creek co-stars for a one-off episode.
Katie Holmes has also said that a Dawson's Creek revival could be "fun".
Dawson's Creek wrapped up its six-season run in 2003.
