Ellen Barkin joins 'Glee' exec's pilot 'The New Normal'

Ellen Barkin is in final talks to star in Glee creator Ryan Murphy's new NBC pilot.

The New Normal - from Murphy and Allison Adler - will focus on a gay couple who decide to start a family.

The Book of Mormon actor Andrew Rannells will play one half of the couple, who turn to a young woman to act as surrogate.

Barkin will play the surrogate's mother, according to Deadline.

The actress is best known for appearing in such films as 1998's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and 2007's Ocean's Thirteen.

Her previous television credits include NBC TV movie Mann's World and a recurring role on Modern Family.

Murphy, Adler and Dante Di Loreto will executive produce the New Normal pilot, with 20th Century Fox TV producing.

Other comedy projects currently in development at NBC include Daddy's Girl from Friends producer Dana Klein and Roseanne Barr's Downwardly Mobile.

A remake of UK sitcom Friday Night Dinner. a new series from Sarah Silverman and Anne Heche vehicle Save Me are also in the works.
