Kristin Kreuk has won a lead role in The CW's new Beauty & the Beast pilot.

A contemporary take on the classic tale, the drama project is described as a love story with a procedural twist.

Former Smallville star Kreuk will play Catherine, a tough NYPD homicide detective, according to Deadline.

Nine years after witnessing her mother's killer slain by a mysterious 'Beast', Catherine tracks down the monster - a man who survived a military experiment gone wrong.

Kreuk is best known for playing Lana Lang on Smallville between 2001 and 2009 and appeared in four episodes of Chuck in 2010.

Unforgettable's Jennifer Levin and Sherri Cooper have penned the script for the Beauty & the Beast pilot.

ABC is also developing a pilot based on Beauty and the Beast, written by Human Target scribe Jon Steinberg.

Runaway Jury's Gary Fleder is involved in both projects, directing the CW pilot and executive producing the ABC version.
