The comedy, which has the working title The Unprofessional, focuses on an executive called Hilary who struggles to cope when she becomes unemployed and begins acting as a full-time mother to her two teenagers.
Germann has now joined the cast as Hilary's husband, Deadline reports.
His character, who is often away on business, is said to be very successful but more easy-going than Hilary.
Germann will star in the pilot opposite Mary McCormack, who has already signed up for the lead role of Hilary.
The project comes from Kari Lizer, who has previously worked on shows such as Will & Grace and The New Adventures of Old Christine.
Meanwhile, Germann's credits include parts in shows such as Ally McBeal and, more recently, House of Lies.
Other comedy pilots currently in the works at ABC include remakes of the British series White Van Man and Only Fools and Horses and projects starring Judy Greer, Mandy Moore and Portia de Rossi.
