Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane has confirmed that he is still working on a remake of The Flintstones.

An updated version of the classic '60s cartoon was first announced in May of last year.

Speaking at this year's South by Southwest, MacFarlane told audience members: "It's still in the early stages - I'm finishing a rewrite on the pilot."

The animator promised that his new Flintstones would "stay true to what [the original] show is".

"There's really not a lot about that show... that needs to be changed visually and stylistically," he explained.

"They invented the template that we're using in animation. We kinda want to keep it, more or less, the same. [But] the stories that we tell will be a little more current."

MacFarlane also insisted that the show's humour will not be as edgy as that featured in Fox's Family Guy.

"It's a balance," he said. "We're kind of shooting for the level of edge in mid-'90s Simpsons. You're not going to see abortion jokes."

The Flintstones originally ran on ABC from 1960 to 1966, inspiring several spinoff shows and both animated and live-action feature films.
