GCB star Denton Everett has defended the controversial ABC drama.

New York City councilman Peter Vallone recently claimed that the show is offensive to Christians, while sponsor Philadelphia later pulled its advertising.

"I grew up in the church in the South, and for me it's dead on," Everett told the Los Angeles Times. "I wish ABC could've kept the full name, Good Christian Bitches. But I'm not here to preach to anybody, for me it's just a job.

"I know a lot of wind has been blown about the show, but it's like [series star] Kristin Chenoweth says, sometimes it's okay to laugh with it, not at it."

Everett, who plays ranch foreman Booth Becker, also criticised Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich, who previously accused GCB of "anti-Christian bigotry".

"For people who react that way, y'all don't even know what the show's about!" argued Everett. "People who take the time... to complain, it changes nothing.

Addressing Gingrich, he said: "I mean, you're running for office. I think there's bigger issues to deal with. And let's be honest, [the criticism] just helps the show's ratings."

GCB continues on Sunday at 10/9c on ABC.
