The reboot, titled Mockingbird Lane, is due to air on NBC. It will tell the familiar story of a family of monsters including Frankenstein's monster and a little vampire.
Izzard was recently announced as star of the pilot, and is also producing.
He has told Vulture that the project will not be a comedy like its source material, but a drama.
"If you know where The Addams Family went from a sitcom to a romantic comedy [when it was remade], ours is going to [change] even more so - but in a different place. I think it's going to be way darker than people expect," he said.
The 50-year-old actor and comedian recently starred in another dark retelling of a familiar story, as Long John Silver in Sky1's adaptation of Treasure Island.
He will next be starring in a musical about Eric Idle alongside Billy Connolly and Russell Brand.
