The USA Network drama also revolves around football, and stars Callie Thorne, Marc Blucas and Scott Cohen. It focuses on Dani, a Long Island divorcee who works as a therapist for a high school football team.
TV Line reports that Charles will play a character named Damon, an expert wide receiver who seeks the advice of Dani, played by Callie Thorne, for his issues in dealing with success. He will appear in a two-episode arc on the second season of the show.
Charles was also recently announced as a new addition to the CBS crime drama NCIS, as an arson investigator.
He also had a guest appearance on the short-lived ABC period drama Pan-Am in November.
The 28-year-old actor is best known for his role as Smash on the Emmy-nominated Friday Night Lights, which completed a five-season run last year.
Charles's episodes of Necessary Roughness are scheduled to air later this summer on USA.
