General Hospital was tipped to be axed after the network cancelled its other weekday serials All My Children and One Life To Live last April.
It then announced that the programme's traditional 3pm slot would be taken by Katie Couric's new talkshow Katie from September 10.
However, ABC has since confirmed that General Hospital will continue to air at the expense of The Revolution, the struggling talkshow that replaced One Life To Live.
The cancelled format will cease to air at the start of July and be temporarily replaced by a daytime spinoff of Good Morning America, which will broadcast in its 2pm slot until Katie's arrival.
General Hospital has aired a total of over 12,500 episodes so far.
