'Buffy' spinoff 'Ripper' could still happen, says Joss Whedon

Joss Whedon has revealed that he is still interested in a new Buffy spinoff.

Proposed series Ripper - first mooted as early as 2001 - would follow Giles (Anthony Head) as he battles the paranormal in England.

"You could make that now, or you could make it ten years from now," Whedon told The A.V. Club.

"I've tortured Tony more than any other living human with [promises of] 'We're definitely gonna do this!', because I thought we were."

Whedon added that 58-year-old Head is "still right" for the show and "could still bring it".

"That's the thing with Ripper - it doesn't go away in my head," he admitted.

The Avengers director also confirmed that the BBC had approached him about making Ripper as an original series.

He explained: "The BBC came to me at one point, like, 'It doesn't have to be Ripper, it can just be [Anthony Head], and there's magic'.

"That story was always about a mature guy who's lived, and about the choices he's made."
