Law & Order: Special Victims Unit has been officially renewed for a 14th season.

The long-running NBC crime drama had been rumoured to be on the verge of cancellation due to poor ratings, but creator Dick Wolf has agreed a new deal for it to return.

NBC has also picked up Wolf's new firefighter drama Chicago Fire for a full series order.

Chicago Fire stars House actor Jesse Spencer in an action-filled drama about the men and women who work at the Chicago Fire Department.

Eamonn Walker, Taylor Kinney, Monica Raymund, David Eigenberg, Charlie Barnett, Lauren German, Teri Reeves and Merle Dandridge will also star in the series.

Dick Wolf has also signed a new contract to produce a new military competition reality series with Mark Burnett.

Law & Order: SVU showrunner Warren Leight recently stated that he hoped the series would carry on for much longer than 14 seasons.
