The Top Gear host was seen shooting new scenes for his BBC America show Richard Hammond's Crash Course in Los Angeles this week.
The 42-year-old filmed himself walking along a road while being heavily engulfed in flames, wearing just jeans and a shirt.
He smothered fire-resistant Vaseline over his face and hands to avoid getting burnt.
Hammond later tweeted: "It's for a US show called Crash Course. I get to do cool stuff and make an idiot of myself."
The presenter was also seen jumping backwards off a high bridge.
Richard Hammond is known for taking part in stunts for TV, and was in a critical condition after a high speed crash while filming Top Gear in 2006.
He will host new hidden camera TV series The Secret Service on BBC One in 2013.
