The CBS legal drama stars Janet Montgomery as Martina, a working class woman from New Jersey who is in competition with her colleagues at a top law firm in New York.
Speaking at the TCA summer press tour on Sunday (July 29), Calvo said that Made in Jersey will confront stereotypes as seen in shows like Real Housewives of New Jersey and Jersey Shore, reports Deadline.
"I'm from New Jersey, so I know that people from New Jersey are not what you see [on those shows]," Calvo said.
"This [Made in Jersey] is sort of a Valentine to a state that I don't think gets a lot of good press."
Calvo added that she wants "swat down" stereotypes and "get on with it".
Montgomery also shared her thoughts on her character.
"We don't want to make a caricature," she said. "This isn't a reality show. I'm English. I'm an actress creating a character."
Made in Jersey - also starring Kyle MacLachlan and Pablo Schreiber - premieres on September 28 at 9pm ET.
