Koushun Takami's 1999 novel Battle Royale - made into a 2000 film by Kinji Fukasaku - follows a group of schoolchildren who are pitted against each other in a fight to the death.
"We'd love to do it," Pedowitz told reporters at the TCA press tour. "Hopefully, we'll be able to make a deal with the producers, and we'll see where it goes."
The network head insisted that a Battle Royale television series is viable for the teen-oriented CW, despite the original book's violent content, Entertainment Weekly reports.
"We're not planning to do anything that we cannot get on the air," he argued. "No, we're not going to go in that direction [of on-screen violence]. We're going to wait to see what happens and how things develop."
Pedowitz added that he is looking for a show with a "Game of Thrones / Hunger Games tone".
"Battle Royale comes with a nice cult following, as we all know," he said.
