The CW is developing a rival Sleepy Hollow TV series to compete with Fox.

It was reported last month that Star Trek writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci were in talks to adapt The Legend of Sleepy Hollow for the Fox network.

The CW is now developing its own adaptation, Deadline reports. Both projects are based on Washington Irving's 19th century short story.

Patrick Macmanus and Grant Scharbo (The Gates) will co-write the second version, described as "a boundary-pushing horror story for television".

Sleepy Hollow was previously adapted into a 1999 film by director Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci.

The last US TV development season saw The CW and ABC develop rival projects based on the Beauty and the Beast fairy tale. The CW's take - starring Kristin Kreuk - was picked up to series and debuts on October 11.

However, ABC's version - starring Darius Campbell and Primeval actress Ruth Bradley - did not make it past the pilot stage.
