Bill Hader: 'Kristen Wiig's Saturday Night Live farewell choked me up'

Bill Hader has said that Kristen Wiig's departure from Saturday Night Live was incredibly emotional.

Wiig left SNL in May in a star-studded final sketch, where Mick Jagger, Steve Martin and the cast serenaded her with the Rolling Stones hit 'Ruby Tuesday'.

Hader has now told The Los Angeles Times that singing 'Ruby Tuesday' actually kept him from openly weeping.

"That was my way of trying not to start crying. Put all your energy in the song! Make it fun," he quipped, adding: "Because when Kristen and I hugged each other, we were both like, 'Oh, boy, here it comes'."

Hader also said that Wiig's on-air farewell allowed him to reflect on his long history with the Bridesmaids star.

"[Our history] was the first thing that flashed in my mind during that last sketch," he explained.

"That first day together. Then doing movies together, all the ups and downs. All that history hits you, the emotions. But I'm a sentimental person."

Saturday Night Live is to return with two pre-election primetime specials in September on NBC.
