The award winning producer of The Daily Show and spin off The Colbert Report has stepped down.

Ben Karlin, who won nine Emmys for the Comedy Central hits, is to leave the shows at the end of December.

Doug Herzog, network president, said he had been worn out by working on the two programmes simultaneously. "Ben has been doing this a long time," he told the New York Times. "Four nights a week. Forty-some odd weeks a year."

He added that Karlin would continue to advise on both shows on ocassions.

The shows have gained respect for their political satire and calibre of guests since Karlin began in 1999. He also won the 2005 Thurber Prize for American Humour for his part in the book The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction.
