Curry was initially pitched to appear in a pre-taped spoof with the Modern Family cast, involving Ed O'Neill and his co-stars wanting to replace Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who plays Lily Tucker-Pritchett on the series.
The proposed sketch would have featured O'Neill speaking to someone off-camera, saying: "You'd be perfect... you've had some experience at this!"
Curry then would have been shown sitting opposite O'Neill in a humorous reference to her Today firing last summer.
NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt ultimately decided against allowing Curry to tape the sketch and she was replaced by Ken Jeong, reports Page Six.
Neither Curry nor NBC has commented on this report.
The journalist is currently serving as a special correspondent for NBC News.
Her brief tenure as Today co-anchor came after more than a decade as the show's newsreader.
