The lives of outlaws Bonnie Elizabeth Parker and Clyde Chestnut Barrow have most famously been depicted in the 1967 movie starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway.
Deadline reports that Cyrus is in negotiations to star as Bonnie in a four-hour miniseries for A+E's History and Lifetime channels.
Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who have worked together on projects including Smash, are the show's executive producers.
The script has been penned by John Rice and Joe Batteer, who were previously the writing team on Nicolas Cage film Windtalkers.
Cyrus is also to appear as a guest star on Two and a Half Men, in an episode airing on October 17 on CBS.
