The X-Files creator Chris Carter is to return to television with a new drama series.

The After - written by Carter - is described as a thriller centred on a mysterious event and will be produced by Georgeville Television, Deadline reports.

"Chris has woven his mythology magic within a very human, grounded story about the moment when we realise all of our worst fears about the world and its future," Georgeville CEO Marc Rosen said.

Carter created The X-Files in 1993 and is also responsible for cult series Millennium and Harsh Realm.

Last year, he was reported to be working on mystery police thriller Unique but it was confirmed in April that the project was no longer going forward.

Georgeville Television is also developing a remake of UK sci-fi drama Blake's 7 with director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) for Syfy, NBC pirate drama Crossbones by Luther creator Neil Cross and Sense8 from the Wachowskis and Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski.
