26m viewers tuned in to watch William Petersen's lead character Gil Grissom announce a surprise sabbatical from the team.
Petersen is temporarily leaving the show to participate on stage. This was explained on screen by Grissom announcing that he was leaving the CSI team for a teaching assignment on America's East Coast.
The CSI episode was doubtlessly helped by its main opposition, ABC's Grey's Anatomy, still running in repeats. It averaged 26.12m viewers and a 21% share among adults 18-49.
