The CW is developing a new teen drama centred around Mary Queen of Scots.

The historical figure will take centre stage in the new pilot, which is being pitched as 'Game of Thrones meets Marie Antoinette'.

Reign will reimagine Mary as a "warrior queen" with a "girl posse", according to Deadline.

In real life, Mary Stuart was queen regnant of Scotland from December 1542 to July 1567. She was ultimately executed after being found guilty of plotting to assassinate Queen Elizabeth I of England, her first cousin once removed.

Laurie McCarthy (CSI: Miami) and Stephanie SenGupta (Hawaii Five-0) will serve as writers and executive producers on Reign.

Other pilots currently in contention for a series pick-up at The CW include a remake of UK series Metropolis from Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas and contemporary updates of both Alice in Wonderland and Great Expectations.
