Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky - writers on NBC's The Office - will exec produce the pilot, alongside the show's creators Emily Halpern and Sarah Haskins.

53-year-old Whitford is best known for playing Josh Lyman on The West Wing between 1999 and 2006 and later starred in short-lived series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and The Good Guys.

Last pilot season, the actor was cast in Fox's spy pilot The Asset, but the project was not picked up to series. More recently, he landed a recurring role in the third season of Showtime's Shameless.

Other pilots in development at ABC alongside Trophy Wife include Joss Whedon's S.H.I.E.L.D. and a TV version of Heath Ledger movie A Knight's Tale.
