Star Wars - Episode 7 is already targeted for cinematic release in 2015, following the $4.05 billion (£2.5bn) deal.
"We really like Star Wars's potential on TV," Disney CEO Bob Iger told reporters including Deadline. "[Youth-oriented cable channel] Disney XD would be a great home for that."
A Star Wars TV series - provisionally titled Star Wars: Underworld - was previously reported to be in the works and was said to focus on "the criminals and the gangs" of the sci-fi's universe.
Animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars is currently airing its fifth season on Cartoon Network.
