Political Animals will not return for a second season, it has been confirmed.

The Sigourney Weaver drama - which aired on the USA Network - was originally billed as a miniseries, but series creator Greg Berlanti later revealed that all of the show's major stars were "contracted for multiple seasons".

However, USA has now declined to order a second run, according to TVLine.

"We are proud of Political Animals, our miniseries that attracted critical acclaim and impacted the cultural conversation this summer," the network said in a statement.

"It was a pleasure to work with Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark and a powerful cast led by Sigourney Weaver. We look forward to collaborating again with these immensely talented creatives."

Political Animals - which also starred Carla Gugino, Sebastian Stan, Ellen Burstyn and Ciarán Hinds - was first reported to be facing cancellation in September, having attracted a ratings average of just 2.1m viewers across its first season.

USA Network has also cancelled Fairly Legal and Common Law, while the future of Necessary Roughness is yet to be decided.

Meanwhile, Burn Notice, Suits, Royal Pains, White Collar and Covert Affairs have all been picked up for new seasons.
