Networks rally troops with PSAs

The big six networks are to put their support behind the US troops in the war effort by making their own public service announcements (PSAs).
The plan emerged during a special wartime committee meeting headed by Hollywood lobbyist Jack Valenti, according to Variety.
A subcommittee, responsible for PSAs and trailers, announced the collation of over 150 ideas from networks and studios. As such, ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, UPN and The WB will all produce their own PSAs for broadcast.
The main focus however, was the development of PSAs for overseas broadcast; specifically the Middle East. "You want to make sure that any such message is appropriate. You want to make sure it has impact," said one source on the committee.
Among the possibilities for reaching such an audience is to involve the Arab news channel Al-Jazeera, which received much exposure at the height of the war on terror.
Another particpant in the meeting said: "Valenti was quite clear that the White House isn't involved in any coordination. We're acting on our own now. It's a little unwieldy to have 40 people on a conference call, but Jack does a good job of keeping the train on the track."
Another meeting is expected to be held in ten days time.
