Esparza - who previously worked with Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller on his show Pushing Daisies - will play the role of Dr Chilton, according to TVLine.

The character has previously been portrayed by Benjamin Hendrickson in Michael Mann's 1986 Red Dragon adaptation Manhunter and by Anthony Heald in 1991's The Silence of the Lambs and 2002's Red Dragon.

42-year-old Esparza's past credits include stints on short-lived CBS drama A Gifted Man, supernatural drama Medium and a role opposite Vin Diesel in 2006 film Find Me Guilty.

Also attached to star in Hannibal are Laurence Fishburne, Gina Torres, Eddie Izzard and Hugh Dancy - who will play Lecter's FBI nemesis Will Graham.

The series will premiere on NBC in early 2013.
