The ten-part action-adventure drama, set in 1715, has been devised by Luther creator Neil Cross.

Laurie is nearing a deal to play Edward Teach - better known as Blackbeard - who rules over the thieves and villains of the Bahamian island of New Providence.

Crossbones would be the English actor's first television role since he completed an eight-season run on medical drama House.

The in-development series is an adaptation of Colin Woodard's book The Republic of Pirates, which is set during the 'golden age of piracy' in the early 1700s and charts Blackbeard's feud with assassin Tom Lowe.

Laurie previously claimed that he would "probably not" return to series television following his long-running House role.

"As you probably know, the financing of all television shows is dictated by finding an audience between 18 and 49," he explained. "I've now passed out of the 49, so I'm probably no longer a desirable commodity for television producers."
