The American Idol winner is to play Maria Von Trapp in a three-hour televised staging of the musical.
Smash producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron will oversee the Peacock Network's version of The Sound of Music, which has been an enduring Broadway hit.
An NBC spokesperson said of the project: "We're thrilled to be presenting the Broadway version of The Sound of Music live and having Carrie Underwood as the star brings it to a new generation who will fall in love with it for the first time as many millions of people already have."
The Sound of Music is expected to air during the 2013 holiday season.
Underwood is of course primarily known for her chart-topping country music hits, but she has had acting roles in How I Met Your Mother and Soul Surfer.
Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music made its Broadway debut in 1959 with an all-star cast including Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel.
A 1965 film adaptation earned five Academy Awards.
