Psycho television prequel Bates Motel has cast Jere Burns in a major role.

Burns - who has previously appeared on Breaking Bad and Justified - will play a mystery role on the A&E series, Deadline reports.

Set decades before the events of Robert Bloch's novel Psycho - famously adapted for film in 1960 by Alfred Hitchcock - Bates Motel will explore the childhood of future serial killer Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his relationship with his domineering mother (Vera Farmiga).

Lost's Nestor Carbonell, Pan Am's Mike Vogel, Once Upon a Time's Keegan Connor Tracy and Caprica's Richard Harmon also star in the ten-part first season.

Latest cast addition Burns has recently appeared in episodes of CBS drama Hawaii Five-0 and USA series Burn Notice and Psych.

A&E president Bob DeBitetto has promised that Bates Motel - from former Lost producer Carlton Cuse - will be "edgy, provocative and different".

The series will premiere on the cable network in 2013.
