Last Resort co-creator Shawn Ryan is returning to television with a new HBO drama.

Badlands will explore issues of love and family within the context of a struggling mining town hit hard by the economic crisis, Deadline reports.

Ryan's ABC drama Last Resort - devised with Karl Gajdusek - was axed by ABC last month and will end after airing its 13 ordered episodes.

He will collaborate with the show's co-executive producer Ron Fitzgerald again on Badlands. Fitzgerald will write the pilot episode alongside Rolin Jones (Smash, Friday Night Lights).

Ryan is best known for creating award-winning FX cop drama The Shield and is also developing a US remake of Sky1's Mad Dogs.

The writer recently admitted that ABC's decision to cancel Last Resort "didn't come as a huge shock".

"It wasn't a huge shock, and yet still it's a disappointment," he explained. "I would compare it to if you have a relative who becomes terminally ill. You know it's coming, and yet you still are shocked when it happens."
