'Psycho' prequel 'Bates Motel' trailer debuts online - video

By
A trailer for the upcoming A&E series Bates Motel has been unveiled online.

The clip introduces viewers to the teenage Norman Bates and his mother Norma, as part of the re-imagined backstory to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho.

The video opens with allusions to a terrible tragedy that befell the Bates family and caused them to open up a motel in a picturesque town as an attempt to "start over".

A girl from the local area can also be seen confronting Norman (Freddie Highmore) and noting that he is "different", while in a voiceover, Norma (Vera Farmiga) describes her seemingly violent son as a "sensitive boy [who's] been through a lot."

The two-and-a-half minute clip also shows behind the scenes moments and interviews with the stars of the show.

"We're not remaking Psycho," explains Farmiga. "We're using it as inspiration."

"It's an incredible re-imagining of the original," adds Nestor Carbonell (Lost), who plays a local sheriff.

Carlton Cuse - the executive producer of the show - describes the contemporary setting for the story as a "town that looks really beautiful on the outside, but underneath... is really dark and malevolent".

The trailer concludes with Norman appearing to dump a body wrapped in a burlap sack and chains into a body of water.

Bates Motel will premiere on A&E in March 2013. Producers are currently running a contest allowing viewers to design the title sequence for the series.
