"I'm the luckiest guy in the world that I had this opportunity to do both of these shows, and it does come down to a scheduling thing and a timing thing," he said.

The 34-year-old actor played the recurring role of Elijah on Girls but will appear in just four of season two's ten episodes.

"If I could be in two places at once I obviously would have done it," he insisted. "It's a hard thing, to put together these shows with people's schedules."

Rannells added that he is "completely heartbroken" to be leaving the Emmy-winning comedy series and its cast behind.

"I mean, if I could be hanging out with Hannah (Lena Dunham) all the time I would," he admitted. "So yes, I miss them terribly."

Girls returns to US screens on Sunday, January 13 at 9pm on HBO, with Sky Atlantic showing the first episode of the second season a day later at 10pm in the UK.
