The show will see fictional horror icons - including Dr Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and characters from Dracula - as they cross paths in Victorian London.

"John Logan and Sam Mendes are two of the great storytellers of our time," said David Nevins, Showtime's President of Entertainment.

"The visual spectacle combined with the psychological insight in their reimagining of these iconic literary characters seems totally mesmerising to me. This promises to be a wholly original television show."

Penny Dreadful marks Mendes and Logan's first collaboration for television. The series will enter production in late 2013.

Logan has reportedly signed to pen the next two James Bond movies, while Mendes has also refused to rule out a return to the 007 franchise.
