Scott Foley is to appear on political drama Scandal.

The actor - who recently starred on True Blood - has been cast in a major season two plot arc, TVLine reports.

Details on Foley's character are currently under wraps, but he will appear in multiple Scandal episodes later this year.

The 40-year-old's past credits include roles on Felicity, Cougar Town and Scrubs, plus a stint on Grey's Anatomy - also created by Scandal's Shonda Rhimes.

He most recently filmed seven episodes of new Fox sitcom The Goodwin Games before production on the comedy series prematurely wrapped late last year. Despite the halt in production, Fox president Kevin Reilly has indicated that the produced Goodwin Games episodes could still air in summer 2013.

Scandal was recently criticised by conservative advocacy group the Parents Television Council after the show broadcast a torture scene as part of its January 10 episode.

The series airs on ABC in the US and on More4 in the UK.
