"It's basically in real timeā€¦ [many] years later," Bateman disclosed. "[It's] where we all are in our different places and we're kind of coming back together."

He added of the Bluths' troubles: "The time has not been kind to all of us, things are even worse [than in the series finale]. We've continued digging and found a new bottom."

Bateman had previously hinted that Arrested Development's fourth season sees his good-natured character Michael Bluth at his most "pathetic".

"Michael has been a little banged up over the last [few] years and he's lost a little dignity and he's trying to get his life back together," the actor disclosed earlier this month.

Six-time Emmy winner Arrested Development streams its new season exclusively on Nextlix in May in the US. Netflix also screens the series in the UK.
