The Baltimore Ravens' victory over the San Francisco 49ers was watched by 108.41 million viewers, falling shy of the record-breaking figures achieved by last year's Super Bowl XLVI (111.3m) and the previous year's Super Bowl XLV (111.0m).
CBS's broadcast of the game was also the second highest-rated Super Bowl in 27 years with a 46.3 household rating and a 69% share. Last year's championship decider achieved a 47.0/71 score.
The results from Nielsen do not factor in the stadium blackout, which delayed the game for 34 minutes.
Elementary's special post-Super Bowl edition took a hit from its unexpected late start time at 11.15pm - averaging 20.8 million viewers and a 7.8 rating in the adult demo - but it was still enough to earn the largest demo ratings for any series this season.
This year's Super Bowl included a half-time show from Beyoncé, who reunited with her Destiny's Child bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams to perform hits such as 'Independent Women (Part 2)' and 'Bootylicious'.
Beyoncé later described the opportunity to share the stage with Rowland and Wiliams as an "honour", calling them "phenomenal ladies".
