Van Helsing will be re-envisioned as a "brilliant professor". Obsessed by the idea of revenge, he is potentially more of a public threat than Dracula, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Kretschmann's previous credits include Cars 2, King Kong, 24 and ABC's The River. He has also previously played Dracula in Dario Argento's 3D movie, which was loosely based on the Bram Stoker novel.

NBC's Dracula is set in 1890s London and will star Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the title role.

Other key cast members include Jessica de Gouw as Dracula's love interest Mina Murray, Katie McGrath as Mina's friend Lucy Westenra and Victoria Smurfit as Lady Jayne.

Dracula is tipped to premiere later in 2013.
