BBC World gains wider US coverage

A new carriage agreement between BBC World and Verizon has resulted in the BBC's global news channel becoming available 24 hours a day in several major metropolitan areas across America.
The news comes a little over a year after BBC World concluded its first US carriage agreement with Cablevision, a cable operator serving parts of Connecticut, New Jersey and New York and started airing breakfast news programmes specifically aimed at the US market.
BBC World has now appeared on channel 92 on Verizon's fibre-to-the-home FiOS digital TV service, which is rolling out across the US and is currently available in parts of California, Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia.
"BBC World telecasts to more than 200 countries and territories across the globe, yet few U.S. cable companies offer it," said Terry Denson, VP of FiOS TV content and programming at Verizon. "We’re delighted to give our customers another distinctive choice that further serves their diverse interests and isn’t found on most competing systems."
"BBC News already has a strong reputation in the US," said BBC World director of distribution and business development Jeff Hazell. "BBC World channel offers audiences a truly international news agenda and a global perspective and is in the enviable position of being able to meet the demands of American viewers for in-depth, balanced international news."
