HBO chief executive Chris Albrecht has resigned after being arrested in Las Vegas on suspicion of assaulting his girlfriend on Saturday.

Albrecht said Tuesday that he was taking a temporary leave of absence to deal with his alcoholism; however, a statement issued by HBO parent company Time Warner yesterday evening indicated that Albrecht's departure would be permanent.

"With great regret, at the request of Time Warner, I have agreed to step down as chairman and CEO of Home Box Office," Albrecht said in the statement. "I take this step for the benefit of my Home Box Office colleagues, recognising that I cannot allow my personal circumstances to distract them from the business. I'm very proud of what we have achieved together at Home Box Office, and I wish everybody there many more successes in the future."

HBO's chief operating officer Bill Nelson will act as interim CEO until Albrecht's replacement is appointed. Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons said that Albrecht's departure was "the right decision for the company."
