Penny Dreadful is being written and executive produced by Skyfall duo John Logan and Sam Mendes in their first collaboration for television.

The eight-part series - which will commence production in September - tells the origin stories of literary horror characters such as Victor Frankenstein, Frankenstein's monster, Dorian Gray and Count Dracula, as they deal with life in Victorian London.

"John Logan and Sam Mendes are two of the great storytellers of our time," said David Nevins, Showtime's President of Entertainment.

"The visual spectacle combined with the psychological insight in their reimagining of these iconic literary characters seems totally mesmerising to me. This promises to be a wholly original television show."

The series will be shot on location in Dublin after production was moved from the UK.

Piper will next appear on screen in Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special. She will reprise the role of Rose Tyler alongside David Tennant, Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman and John Hurt.
