Homer Simpson to turn World Cup football referee in new 'Simpsons' episode

By
A special episode of The Simpsons will centre around the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie will travel to South America for the football tournament. However, would-be referee Homer runs into trouble when local gangsters push him into match-fixing.

The Simpsons' network Fox said: "The episode follows Springfield's most famous family as it journeys to Brazil, only to find Homer's honesty put to the test by one of the slickest South American gangsters in the soccer match-bribing business."

The animated series and America's longest-running sitcom will also collaborate with a number of top football clubs to release Simpsons-themed merchandise.

Fox added: "Soccer fans worldwide will be able to own a range of products with such participating club teams, including FC Barcelona, FC Zenit Saint Petersburg, Corinthians and Boca Juniors, that also feature The Simpsons branding.

"Each participating team's merchandise will also include never-before-created 'Simpsonised' versions of its main roster, transformed into custom characters as part of the entire line of products."

Premier League team West Ham United made a surprise cameo of sorts last year. Manchester United's Ryan Giggs was previously namechecked in a 2003 episode, and Cristiano Ronaldo appeared in a skit with Homer for the 2010 World Cup.
