BBC appoints ex-'CBS Evening News' producer

The BBC has appointed Rome Hartman, the former executive producer of the CBS Evening News who oversaw anchor Katie Couric's arrival on the broadcast, to develop and executive produce a new one-hour nightly newscast for BBC America and BBC World.

The programme will be anchored from Washington, DC. It has been billed as "a cornerstone" of BBC America's weekday evening schedule will "showcase the best of BBC journalism for American audiences."

"It’s a true honour to join what is undoubtedly the best, most ambitious broadcast news organisation in the world," said Rome Hartman. "More and more Americans are seeking smart and sophisticated coverage of the world; coverage the BBC is uniquely capable of providing. Finding new ways to bring the fine work of BBC journalists around the globe to a growing American audience is an incredibly exciting challenge."

The newscast will start airing in the Autumn.
