Entertainer and media business mogul Merv Griffin has died of prostate cancer at the age of 82.
Griffin, who started out on TV in 1958 as host of game show Play Your Hunch, went on to host the long-running The Merv Griffin Show. He is best known, however, for creating Jeopardy in 1964 and Wheel of Fortune in 1975, both of which are still staples of early-prime television viewing in the US today.
Upon his retirement, Griffin sold Merv Griffin Enterprises, which held the format rights to both game shows, to Columbia Pictures Television for $250m; at the time, making him Forbes' richest Hollywood star in history.
