'High School Musical 2' breaks ratings record

Zac Efron

Disney's second High School Musical has become the most-watched show on American cable television in history.

A whopping 17.2m viewers tuned in for the two-hour Disney Channel event, easily smashing the 16m record held by ESPN's Monday Night Football set last September and a full 10m more than tuned in for the first movie's initial outing.

Of the 17.2m total, 6.1m were children aged between 6-11; 5.9m were 9-14 tweens.

High School Musical 2 will premiere on Disney Channel UK on September 21.
