Rhys: Gay award for 'Brothers' "brilliant"

Brothers & Sisters star Matthew Rhys is pleased that the ABC show was praised by gay rights organisation GLAAD for its positive representation of gay life.
"All of us were so happy about that," Rhys, who plays Kevin Walker in the series, told Attitude. "It was very important to the show's creator and writer Jon Robin Baitz, who is gay himself, that Kevin be a very real, positive character and not be driven or defined by his sexuality."
He explained that Baitz was keen on moving "beyond the usual stereotypes."
"Jon didn't want Kevin's identifying characteristic to be that he was gay or that his sexuality was an issue in any way. He's all these other things as well and just happens to be gay. That's what Jon wanted to push - Kevin doesn't have to come out, his being gay isn't a problem for his family."
Brothers & Sisters airs in the UK on Channel 4.
