CNN launches high definition channel
Published Wednesday, Sep 5 2007, 09:39 BST | By James Welsh

CNN HD offers a simulcast of the standard definition CNN/US service, with live programming from the New York broadcast centre - including American Morning and Anderson Cooper 360 - and its signature documentaries - going out in high definition. Other programming will be upscaled to high definition using a system similar to that employed by CNN's sister network TNT, which frequently upscales older episodes of drama series such as ER into HD; however, 4:3 news material will not be stretched.
"As part of our strategic growth, we are aggressively investing in our newsgathering efforts worldwide to bolster CNN’s delivery of news and information across all available platforms and services," said Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide. "Our move into HD is one of many significant ventures we have undertaken this year to increase CNN’s edge as the world’s news leader."
