DeGeneres cancels New York plans

Ellen DeGeneres has cancelled a plan to film episodes of her talk show in New York after the Writers Guild of America said she was "not welcome" in the city because of her decision to continue taping her programme.

Last week, the WGA, East accused DeGeneres of not supporting the writers and violating strike rules by continuing to work on her show. The organisation said: "Ellen DeGeneres went back on the air this week after honouring only one day of the writers strike. In anticipation of her plans to tape shows in New York City on November 19th and 20th, the Writers Guild of America, East is extremely disappointed to see that Ellen has chosen not to stand with writers during the strike. Ellen's peers who host comedy/variety shows have chosen to support the writers and help them get a fair contract, Ellen has not. On her first show back, Ellen said she loves and supports her writers, but her actions prove otherwise."

In addition to her membership of the WGA, DeGeneres is also a member of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. AFTRA issued a statement in defence of DeGeneres, in which it said: "AFTRA members such as Ms. DeGeneres who are working under the AFTRA Network TV Code are legally required by the no-strike clause of that contract to report to work and perform their AFTRA-covered responsibilities. Ms. DeGeneres, along with thousands of other entertainment industry workers... are reporting to work as legally required."

The production company that makes Ellen pointed out that other syndicated talk shows including Oprah are also still in production.

Today, WGAE president Michael Winship said: "We're delighted that Ellen DeGeneres has decided not to come to New York to tape her programme. She knows that the Writers Guild East would have been there to protest her lack of solidarity, not only with her Guild writing staff but all the striking members of the Writers Guild, of which she is a member. We will be even more delighted if she does not cross the Guild picket lines at the NBC Studios in Burbank, where her show usually is produced."
