Letterman's Pants, WGA schedule talks
Published Thursday, Dec 20 2007, 11:00 GMT | By James Welsh
Talks aimed at getting late night talk shows produced by CBS comic David Letterman's production company Worldwide Pants back on the air early next year are to take place on Friday.
Representatives from Worldwide Pants and the Writers Guild of America will start negotiations for an interim deal tomorrow. Worldwide Pants was one of the first companies to express interest in reaching an agreement outside the AMPTP umbrella with the WGA when the writers' guild announced it was interested in pursuing such negotiations.
Worldwide Pants president and CEO Rob Burnett told The Hollywood Reporter: "It is inconceivable to us that there is any producing entity more deserving than Worldwide Pants, which has been and continues to be a staunch supporter of the writers guild and its positions."
On Tuesday, it emerged that NBC will be bringing its late night talk shows back to the network without writers on January 2. A Worldwide Pants-WGA deal would allow David Letterman's Late Show and Craig Ferguson's Late Late Show to return to the air with writers, giving them a competitive edge.
However, a deal may be difficult to reach as new media rights - a key part of the dispute between the WGA and the AMPTP - are understood to be controlled by CBS, not Worldwide Pants.
