Fox to stick with short-term upfront

Fox has said it will not set out full-year schedules at its May upfront - and has taken a dig at NBC Universal for picking up the idea.
NBC yesterday announced changes to its annual pitch to advertisers. The network will unveil provisional 12-month line-ups in April before holding several meetings and a final one-off show in May.
Fox responded by pointing out that it pioneered round-the-year scheduling tactic several years ago. "I'm trying to understand what is revolutionary or unique about what they're doing," said Fox scheduling manager Preston Beckman. "Everything [NBC] said, either we're doing or some other network is doing. We've been developing year-round programming, and we have a great dialogue with advertisers."
However, the network confirmed it would only be giving firm plans for the Fall schedule at this year's upfront, but would still outline "possibilities" for winter and spring.
"There's no reason why we should have everything shot or piloted before the May upfronts," said Fox chairman Peter Liguori. "We consistently premiere through the year, so there's no reason to rush things.
"When you do a quick bake and microwave shows it winds up hurting everybody... Our scheduling strategy and buying remains the same, but how we shoot and develop will be modified in accordance with our needs. That's a nuance, not a revolution."
Fox is expected to air a small number of new shows in the autumn, with the majority following later.
